TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The Leon County Division of Tourism, or Visit Tallahassee, hopes to bring some big-name acts to the capital city as soon as next year.

Visit Tallahassee said they’re turning their eyes to Doak Campbell Stadium after finding their groove selling out smaller venues in the city.

Leon County is entitled to use Doak as part of a $20 million renovation payment for up to 10 days per year. So far, that benefit has gone largely unused, but once renovations are complete, Visit Tallahassee will focus on bringing in big-time acts.

While it’s impossible to say exactly who will take the stage, names floated around include artists like Luke Combs and Blake Shelton.

Kerri Post, the director of the Division of Tourism, said Visit Tallahassee has done a good job, especially post-pandemic, bringing a variety of shows to numerous smaller venues.

“You get the grandparents, you get the brothers and sisters. So the whole family. And so again, for us, it is a sales strategy for events, and we utilize all the venues that we have access to,” Post said.

More Tallahassee news:

For example, Violent Femmes sold out the Adderley Amphitheater at Cascades Park for a concert Friday. That’s 3,200 tickets.

Post said logistics are primarily to blame for a lack of stadium headliners.

“I mean, those are huge, ginormous venues that require just incredible operations and logistics to accommodate crowds that large,” she said.

Built some seven decades ago, Post said Doak Campbell is not designed for concerts. The dozens of semi-trucks, hundreds of crew and all the support staff can’t park very close to the stage. Post said agents for acts will tour venues ahead of time, and they’re likely to pick a venue with reasonable access, even if that venue is in a different city.

But, Post said the stadium renovations will make concerts at Doak Campbell easier to set up. That’s why in five or six months, Visit Tallahassee will start making its sales pitch for stadium shows.

“But think about that. They’re not going to book somewhere where they don’t feel confident that their talent and the logistics are all going to work,” Post said.
