WASHINGTON (7News) — Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith has issued an executive order opening up cooperation between D.C. police and federal immigration enforcement agencies.
Effective immediately, MPD officers are permitted to share information about people not in MPD custody — like individuals they encounter during traffic stops — with federal agencies like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
This information may include an individual's immigration status, home address, place of work, and more.
They will also now provide transportation for federal immigration agency employees and detained subjects.

However, MPD officers are still prohibited from:
- Providing immigration agencies with the personal information of an undocumented person in MPD custody, including their release details, location, or photos.
- Arresting people based on their immigration status, unless there is an additional criminal charge.
- Stopping and questioning a person to determine their immigration status or to enforce civil immigration laws.
- Letting federal immigration officials question subjects in MPD custody, or hold these individuals beyond their release date.

This executive order comes as President Trump invoked Section 740 of the Home Rule Act on Monday, giving the federal government emergency control of D.C.'s police force for 30 days. Army officials say a total of 800 National Guard troops have been mobilized under the president’s emergency declaration and 100 to 200 will be on the streets at any given time.
