WASHINGTON (7News) — A mother's worst nightmare is developing in the heart of Washington, D.C.

Brittani Davis said Dunn and Son's Funeral Home gave her the wrong ashes instead of the ashes belonging to her infant son who died in August 2024.

Davis is shocked over the handling of Micari, her firstborn son's ashes, by Dunn and Son's Funeral Home in D.C.

"I'm angry. I'm disappointed. I'm hurt,” said Davis, Micari's mother.

Micari was stillborn in July and cremated in August.

"There's no end to this pain,” added Davis.

Davis claims on Aug. 14 the funeral home gave her an empty bag with no cremation certificate or seal. A day later, she was handed a bag of ashes, a seal, and a cremation certificate. The Davis family then paid a visit to Chambers Funeral Home & Crematorium in Riverdale, Maryland where Micari was cremated.

"Macari's dad goes to the crematory and asks how the process works. How does it work so he tells him our son's name and he was like 'Oh, I just cremated that baby this morning. This morning? We got ashes last night so how is that possible?" said Davis.

Davis said the crematory told the family it was asked by Dunn and Sons to change the date on her son's cremation certificate from Aug. 1 to Aug. 15.

Dunn and Sons told the Davis family that isn't true.

Davis said the funeral home admitted it made a mistake. It gave her the ashes of a baby girl named Makari Davis, whose first name is spelled with a K. Davis' son's first name, Macari, is spelled with a "C."

"Till this day, I still don't have my son's ashes,” said Davis.

7News went looking for answers at Dunn and Son's and came face to face with its owner Tresa Dunn.

"If you don't know what you are talking about, I suggest you leave,” said Tresa Dunn, owner of Dunn and Sons Funeral Home.

"That's why I'm here asking you questions,” said 7News I-Team Investigative Reporter Scott Taylor.

"That's why I'm telling you to leave, sir,” said Dunn.

"Ya, we have left. Have a great day,” said Taylor.

"You haven't left because this is still my property. So, get off of it,” said Dunn.

"Thanks for being so cordial to us, we appreciate it,” said Taylor.

"Sir, if you are recording something I suggest you get rid of it right now,” said Dunn.

"We can record anything we want to,” added Taylor.

"No, you cannot. No, you cannot,” said Dunn.

"I'm on the sidewalk now,” said Taylor.

“I'm going to ask you to put that down,” said Dunn.

"Now you are just being embarrassing. Why are you pushing on me?" asked Taylor.

"I'm not pushing on you,” said Dunn.

"Why don't you just answer my questions? Pretty simple questions. What happened to the ashes?" said Taylor.

The family filed a complaint with D.C.'s Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection. A DLCP investigator told the Davis' that Dunn & Sons was found to have engaged in unethical activity.

7News obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) recommendations from the D.C. Board of Funeral Directors to file three violations against Dunn and Sons. The Board is recommending a $13,000 fine.

The Davis family gave 7News I-Team a copy of Dunn and Son's Funeral Director Brianna Dunn's letter to D.C.'s Attorney General's Office saying:

"She claims Michael Jackson, the father of Micari, threatened her and spat in her face."

Jackson denies those allegations.

Dunn filed a simple assault complaint against Jackson with D.C. Police on Aug. 15.

D.C. Police told 7News detectives made two attempts to contact the victim, Brianna Dunn, by phone and then made a home visit to the victim all to no avail. The victim has not contacted our detectives, and the investigation has not gone forward at this time.

Dunn admits to the AG's Office the Davis family was given the wrong ashes due to the baby's names being similar.

The funeral home offered to return the cost of the cremation, $1,125, to the Davis family and it apologized.

Dunn and Sons offered to handle the exchange of the two ashes, but the Davis family said it wants the parents of the baby girl to meet with them for an exchange. Davis said she has yet to hear from the baby girl's parents.

"I don't know what it is. Who it is. This person in my house and he's not my son,” added Davis.

The District told 7News the case against the funeral home has yet to wrap up.

7News reached out to Dunn and Sons through email and received no response.

We were able to reach Tresa Dunn on the telephone and she hung up on 7 News.
