TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The gunman accused in a shooting at Florida State University that left two dead and multiple injured remains hospitalized and is recovering after being shot by FSU Police.
WCTV has obtained documents detailing Phoenix Ikner’s background and how he became the step-son of a Leon County Sheriff’s Office school resource deputy.
The documents reveal a legal dispute between Ikner’s biological parents, which started in 2007 and continued into 2023.
Documents detail how the courts granted his biological father complete custody of his son in 2017 after his biological mother violated a court order and took her son to Norway for several weeks.
Phoenix’s given first name was Christian, but he changed it to Phoenix when he was 15, according to court records.
A judge’s description of his testimony said he changed his name as it was “a constant reminder of the 2015 tragedy he suffered through,” and “he sees himself as a phoenix, rising from the ashes with renewed youth and life.”

The Tallahassee Police Department said once Ikner is released from the hospital, he will be officially charged and taken to jail.
Authorities identified one of the guns used in the shooting as LCSO Deputy Jessica Ikner’s former service weapon. Right now, she is on voluntary leave from the sheriff’s office as LCSO investigates her storage of the firearm.
