Description

BERRIEN COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Authorities said they believe human remains found off of a rural road in Berrien County belong to an Enigma man who disappeared more than a year ago. Now, investigators say their biggest concern is that they still have no one to notify.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office said skeletal remains discovered off Sapps Lake Road are believed to be those of 88-year-old Manuel Camargo Zavala of Enigma, who was reported missing last March.

Investigators say the remains were found on the south end of the property — the same general area that was searched extensively last year and where trail camera photos had previously captured Zavala entering the woods. A recent woods fire helped clear thick vegetation and improve visibility, which ultimately led to the discovery.

Berrien County Coroner Robert S. Lovein Jr. said what makes this case especially heartbreaking is that officials have not been able to identify any relatives for Zavala.

“There is no one that we can contact as the next of kin, and that’s what makes this case so sad. We’re still looking for someone – anyone. Family or friends”

Zavala was first reported missing on Monday, March 31, 2025, after he had not been seen in several days. A hunter later came forward with a game-camera image taken March 25 around 2:45 p.m., showing Zavala walking in a wooded area south of Enigma off Edgar Drew Dorminey Road. That image was the last confirmed sighting of him.

At this time, authorities say they do not suspect foul play.

Investigators say they hope someone who sees this story may recognize Zavala’s name and help them locate any loved ones.

Anyone with information about Manuel Camargo Zavala’s family, friends or next of kin is urged to contact the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office at 229-686-2091 or 229-686-7071.
