ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - More than 100 Albany families received what they need to celebrate Thanksgiving through a community food giveaway Tuesday.
Travis Luke, a community advocate, hosted the food giveaway at Driskell Park. The event brought together children and families from nearby housing communities and neighborhoods.
Luke said the gathering serves a purpose beyond feeding people for the holidays. He said it’s part of a larger effort to show that residents across Albany of all ages and from different communities can come together in unity.
“We don’t need law enforcement to be present for us to not have violence, I purposely didn’t want law enforcement out here so we can come together and act like folks. The elders not scared to come out here and the youth not scared,” Luke said.
The event was supported by donations from local churches and entrepreneurs. Luke plans to hold the giveaway as an annual tradition.
