ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The city of Albany is partnering with Phoebe Putney to build housing in the medical district.

The city commission approved $2 million as an incentive to build housing units on West Second Avenue near the hospital. The housing units will be available to anyone in Albany, with a focus on professionals living in the city.

The project is in City Commissioner Willie Weaver’s ward. Weaver said this development is essential as the city continues its efforts to revitalize downtown. He called the approval a mutually beneficial step for Albany.

“Two million dollars, even though it sounds like a lot, is a drop in the bucket compared to the city of Albany budget of $300 million, so it is something that we need. I have not had any complaints from anyone in my ward for what we are doing. That is something we need to go forward with,” Weaver said.

The plan is to build 22 units on that land. The city manager said they are also planning similar-use housing on the south side as well.
