COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A Columbus woman pleaded not guilty in court Monday after police say she stabbed two officers responding to a domestic dispute call Saturday night.

Assistant Chief Lance Deaton says one officer who lives at the Grande Apartments responded to the call, along with an on-duty officer.

“This was a domestic dispute call. One officer who lives at the Grande Apartments responded, along with an on-duty officer,” Deaton said.

Deaton says the situation escalated when officers tried to take the woman into custody.

“The other individual got into another altercation with another resident. The officers went in to take her into custody, and that’s when the altercation ensued. The officers were ultimately stabbed several times — one officer stabbed three times, the other officer stabbed once,” Deaton said.

Officers used a Taser to subdue the woman before taking her into custody, according to Deaton.

“Ultimately they used a taser to subdue her. She was taken into custody. Officers were transported to the hospital. They both have been treated and released,” Deaton said.

Neighbors describe the scene

One resident, who did not want to be identified, said he woke up to flashing lights outside his bedroom window.

“I opened my eyes, I saw blue lights inside my bedroom. I said, ‘What is this?’ I got up and pulled the curtain back, and it was about 10 or 12 cars just right here, lights on, and I thought someone had seriously got hurt,” the resident said.

The resident says his mind went straight to a police-involved shooting earlier this year — one in which officers killed a man after he killed a Dollar General worker that morning.

“I went back to the police chief saying, ‘If you hurt one of our officers, we will kill you.’ So that’s the first thing that dawned on me — that’s what made me come outside,” the resident said.

The resident said he came outside in part because he knew an officer lived in the complex.

“You never know what these officers are walking into”

Deaton says the incident is a reminder of the risks officers face, even on routine calls.

“I think the biggest thing I want the public to understand is this is a prime example of — you never know what these officers are walking into,” Deaton said.

Deaton added that one of the officers’ injuries could have been far more serious.

“One of the officers sustained some significant injuries that could’ve been a whole lot worse,” he said.

Use of force questioned after earlier shooting

The stabbing comes as many in the community are still discussing an earlier police-involved shooting and the level of force used in that incident. Deaton says his officers made a different decision this time, despite being attacked.

“They chose a level of force — some would say they had much higher grounds to use force. They chose a much lower level of force because they were concerned about people in other apartments, because they were inside an apartment complex. So they made very good, conscious decisions to not put other people at risk, even though they had already been stabbed,” Deaton said.

Makayla Jacobson was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, felony obstruction and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime. She appeared in court Monday and pleaded not guilty.
