BROXTON, Ga. (WALB) - A grease fire during a family gathering has left the Akinleye family with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the shoes on their feet.
Maria Walker, daughter of the homeowner, said watching her house burn to the ground was like a “slow motion movie.”
“I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it was happening. And there was just nothing I could do to stop it,” said Maria.
The family says they are grateful for life because this situation could have been much worse. At the time of fire, oxygen tanks were inside of the home and gas was left over in the generators from Hurricane Helene.
“I have a lot to be thankful for. I didn’t lose my life or my children’s or my grandchildren’s. If that house had blown, we wouldn’t have even had a chance to get out,” said Shenice Akinleye, the homeowner.
Now, the family is seeking assistance from the community on GoFundMe. Maria served in the military and is now living off disability. Her mother, Shenice, is retired and has been recovering from heart surgery while dealing with the loss of her sister and now the loss of her home.
“I worked all my life since I was 15. I have never drawn unemployment or anything. That home was money for my retirement. Between this and having to bury family members, I am completely broke,” continued Shenice.
The family is currently living in temporary housing and asking the community for financial assistance.
So far, the fundraiser has raised $200 of their $10,000. If you are interested in donating to the family’s cause, click here.
