Description
DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) — The City of Douglas Wastewater Treatment Plant reported a wastewater spill that flowed into an unnamed tributary of the Seventeen Mile River, according to a public notice.
City officials said the spill happened June 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 10:40 p.m. at 622 Iron Road in Douglas. An estimated 50,000 gallons were released.
As a precaution, the city recommends the public avoid contact with the affected stream water until after July 3, 2026.
The city said it will sample the waterway both upstream and downstream of the spill to ensure water quality has not been adversely affected. Testing will include dissolved oxygen concentration, pH and temperature, according to the notice.
Officials said the spill was caused by high water flows from rain, which led to wastewater backing up and coming out of a manhole.
Anyone with questions can contact Kevin Davis, project manager, at 912-389-3444, the notice states.
