VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The city of Valdosta Public Works has released a statement regarding the use of City-issued 96-gallon garbage containers.

They stated that effective on Tuesday, Jan. 6, all City of Valdosta 96- gallon garbage containers will continue to be collected, even if a can is overfilled.

They advise that residents should be aware of the following collection guidelines:

  • No collection of non-City garbage cans. These are considered unpaid cans and will not be serviced.
  • No collection of loose or extra garbage placed on the ground next to City-issued cans.

The Public Works Department will be installing cameras on all garbage trucks during Jan and Feb. City officials say that these cameras will allow the City to document collection activity and capture photos showing the number of garbage containers being serviced at each stop.

At the same time, computer tablets are being prepared for use by sanitation crews. These tablets will:

  • List each customer scheduled for service
  • Verify the number of paid garbage containers assigned to each address
  • Help ensure accurate and efficient weekly collection

Additional Garbage Cans Available

Residents who need additional 96-gallon garbage containers may add an extra City-issued container to their account for a monthly service fee of $8.00 per container.

Important Upcoming Change

The City of Valdosta will begin addressing extra unpaid Valdosta 96-gallon garbage containers that are placed out for collection without being properly registered and paid for. This will take place in March.

For questions regarding garbage collection or to add can to your account, residents are encouraged to contact the City of Valdosta Public Works Department at 229-259-3590.
