WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Central Intelligence Agency on Tuesday became the first major national security agency to offer buyouts to its employees in the latest effort to bring the agency in line with President Donald Trump's priorities, a CIA spokesperson confirmed to The Associated Press.

The CIA said in a statement the buyout offers are part of an effort by new CIA director, John Ratcliffe to move swiftly "to ensure the CIA workforce is responsive to the Administration’s national security priorities.”

“These moves are part of a holistic strategy to infuse the Agency with renewed energy, provide opportunities for rising leaders to emerge, and better position the CIA to deliver on its mission," the agency said.

The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the buyouts, said the spy agency was also freezing the hiring of job applicants already given a conditional offer.

It was not immediately clear who would be allowed to take the offer but the source confirmed some specific operations or areas of expertise may be restricted.

In line with Trump's efforts to slash the size of the government, the White House last week started offering at least 2 million federal employees buyouts as a way to encourage them to resign.

Those who opt to take the buyout by Feb. 6. will receive seven months of salary.

If you resign under this program, you will retain all pay and benefits regardless of your daily workload and will be exempted from all applicable in-person work requirements until September 30, a memo noted.

In response, New York Attorney General Letitia James led a group of 11 other state attorneys general in warning federal employees about the "misleading offer."

"These supposed offers are not guaranteed," she wrote in a press release. "Federal employees should be cautious and follow the guidance of their unions to protect their rights. Attacking our federal workforce will only cause more chaos and confusion for Americans, and will diminish the quality of services our government provides.”

Ratcliffe told members of the Senate Intelligence Committee in January that the CIA must do a better job of harnessing technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing while also expanding the agency’s use of human intelligence collection.

"We’re not where we’re supposed to be,” Ratcliffe said as senators considered his nomination.
