WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump shocked the world Tuesday evening with a proposal for the United States to take control of Gaza and lead its rebuilding process.
"We’re going to give people a chance to live in a beautiful community that’s safe and secure," said Trump.
The announcement was met with immediate backlash from some Palestinians. Yousef Munayyer, a senior fellow at the Arab Center Washington D.C., criticized the plan, saying, "This is what we expect out of mafiosos who are interested really only in their own power."
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., expressed surprise but support for the proposal.
It’s a surprising development but it’s one I think we’ll applaud," Johnson said.
Dan Senor, a former Pentagon and White House advisor for George W. Bush, argued there is logic to Trump's approach.
"We are on a path right now in Gaza to just rinse and repeat Hamas is just going to try to re-insert control, the international community is going to try to help rebuild Gaza with Hamas there?" explained Senor.
Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel sat down with The National News Desk after Trump's announcement. Haskel said Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined a framework during Tuesday's evening press conference and their teams will now get to work hammering out the details.
"In a few weeks I think it’s going to be more clear how everything is going to work, what’s going to happen," Haskel said. She emphasized Israel's desire to bring all hostages home and establish peace. "I really hope we can achieve our goals in diplomatic solutions, we don’t want a war," she said.
When asked about the feasibility of removing Hamas through diplomatic means, Haskel said, "Well, this is something that we’re going to explore now."
The proposal has faced strong opposition from Egypt and Jordan, who have condemned any infringement on Palestinian sovereignty. Saudi Arabia also rejected Trump's proposal. The Arab countries remain strong advocating for a Palestinian state.
Haskel addressed the two-state solution, saying, "Look, you are telling me and I understand that some leadership have been raising it, but you’re telling me to reward the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust with the greatest reward of a state. A state has failed."
The King of Jordan is scheduled to meet with President Trump in Washington next week, followed by a visit from the leader of Egypt the week after.
