Description

WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Department of Government Efficiency is raising concerns over the increasing number of undocumented immigrants receiving taxpayer-funded benefits, with a loophole in the system reportedly leading to over a million additional enrollees in Medicaid.

In California, Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom recently requested two emergency loans totaling more than $6 billion to address budget shortfalls after an unexpected surge in undocumented migrants enrolling in Medi-Cal.

Guadalupe Manriquez from the California Department of Finance said, "So in the current year to cover undocumented individuals in Medi-Cal or spending $9.5 billion total funds."

Dr. Mehmet Oz, CMS Administrator, commented on the situation, stating, "The state of California has taken tens of billions of dollars from the federal government providing free health insurance for illegal immigrants in California. We are going to get that money back."

New York is experiencing a similar crisis, with immigrant enrollment in emergency Medicaid surpassing 480,000. Elon Musk and his DOGE team claim to have identified at least 1.3 million illegal migrants with Medicaid.

Antonio Gracias, a DOGE Border Team Volunteer, highlighted the issue, saying, "In '21, you see 270,000 people. It goes all the way to 2.1 million in '24. These are non-citizens that are getting Social Security numbers."

Despite warnings that cost-cutting measures may impact Medicaid, supporters argue that providing benefits to undocumented immigrants helps protect the entire community by ensuring their health.

Governor Newsom and others have shown no intention of changing their stance. Newsom was asked about rolling back any of the immigrant healthcare, to which he responded, "It’s not on my docket."

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill aimed at preventing states from using federal Medicaid funds to provide healthcare benefits to undocumented immigrants.
