ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Boys and Girls Club of Albany is hosting its biggest fundraiser of the year to show children across South Georgia that the sky is the limit — and their dreams are within reach.

Tonight is the 37th annual Steak and Burger Dinner. This huge fundraiser helps to ensure that each child has an opportunity to attend the club.

“We take the young people who need us most. We engage them in an outcome driven club experience, and what happens is we see success in three areas: academic success, good character and citizenship and healthy lifestyles.” CEO of The Boys and Girls Club Jacqueline Robinson said.

Heading into this evening, the Boys and Girls Club exceeded their fundraising goal of $130,000. This money will go towards scholarships and training for the teachers that work at the club.

“Tonight, we will honor our three youth of the year finalists. We’ll announce a winner and acknowledge our partner of the year recipient as well as hear from our amazing Alumni Hall of Famer inductee.” Robinson said.

That inductee is New Edition Band Member and Philanthropist, Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Devoe. He said the Boys and Girls Club played a major part in who he is today. He said the club gives children exposure to their talents and provides a place where they can thrive, making it out of any situation despite what society may say.

“I come from a place that’s not designed for you to make it out of, but because of structure and the safe haven of the Boys and Girls Club, I was able to flourish.” said Devoe. “It’s good to know that an organization like this one impacted my life in such a major way and poured into me. It feels good to know that what they instilled in me pushed me forward for 40 years. I am the reflection of you — If I can do it, then you can do it too.”

Those dreams and accomplishments are seen through ESPN Basketball Analyst Andraya Carter. She encouraged parents to get their kids involved in as much as they can so they can find what it is that they are passionate about.

“The Boys and Girls Club helps young girls and boy find their passion, whatever it is,” Carter said. “There are so many different avenues. Whether it starts in a small town or it starts in a big city. The size of the dream matters than the size of the city.”

The organization said they want young people in Southwest Georgia to see firsthand that all dreams are possible, even becoming President. That’s why tonight, they are honoring President Jimmy Carter for his work on behalf of the club. They’ll also be awarding scholarships, thanks to donor support.

There are over 170 Boys and Girls Clubs across the Peach State. In the Good Life City, there are six Boys and Girls Club locations.
