ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Kennesaw State University (KSU) announced on Wednesday that it is eliminating three majors — including Black studies.
The school said it is getting rid of the program, alongside the philosophy and technical communication majors, “in accordance with the University System of Georgia’s established thresholds.” The majors have had low enrollment numbers and degrees awarded for the past decade, the school said.
Current students will still be able to get their degrees through a two-year teaching plan. Courses in the fields will also still be available to fulfill minors and electives, according to KSU.

The move comes as K-12 and higher education programs across the country are scrubbing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives (DEI) in response to pressure from the Trump administration. KSU did not mention the national circumstances, but the Georgia NAACP said the decision raises “urgent concerns.”
“The Black Studies program is not merely an academic offering; it is a cornerstone of truth-telling, cultural affirmation and intellectual exploration that serves all students,“ the organization said in a statement. ”Eliminating it would be a regressive and damaging decision — one that erases essential history, silences marginalized voices, and contradicts the stated values of public higher education in Georgia.”
The Georgia NAACP is asking for a meeting with KSU’s president and other leadership.
Earlier in April, KSU students were concerned when Student Affairs pamphlets said identity-based student centers and programs are being restructured or eliminated.
“It’s important to keep these spaces so that people feel welcome,” one student, Nico Beltran, told Atlanta News First.
In a statement at the time, KSU said it’s working to follow federal and state regulations and University System of Georgia policies.
“We’ll continue to support the needs of all students and help them access the resources they need to succeed,” the school said.
