LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A North Las Vegas man turned himself into police on Sunday for allegedly killing his girlfriend during a fight, according to an arrest report.
North Las Vegas Police said Markeem Benson was arrested on suspicion of murder for the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Renise Wolfe.
In their arrest report, NLVPD said Benson's father called 911 around 10:16 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, saying Benson wanted to turn himself in for murder. Benson was heard in the background of the call saying, "This happened last night" but didn't know how long because he had fallen asleep.
Officers met with Benson outside of a restaurant and took him into custody. He told police his girlfriend was in a nearby apartment, and they found Wolfe suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.
Police wrote that they found a gun and magazine near her. Benson was arrested and declined to speak further with detectives.
His father told detectives that Benson called saying, "I killed her; I think I killed her" and "told him something to the effect of 'she' came at him with a gun, there was some kind of 'tussle,' and then the gun went off," the report states.
NLVPD wrote that Benson's brother also called 911, saying Benson told him he got into a fight with his girlfriend and that he "did something bad."
Wolfe's family told police the two had been dating since July and last saw them at a family holiday party, where they seemed normal at first. Benson appeared to recognize a woman who later arrived, however, sparking an argument.
Detectives learned more about their relationship, with one person saying Benson "was very possessive" and had physical fights in the past, according to the report. A records check found that he had prior convictions for attempted robbery and home invasion, plus several arrests for domestic violence-related offenses.
Police checked for surveillance video and found video from a doorbell camera that recorded two to four pops at about 1:20 a.m.
"Markeem said he fell asleep after the shooting, and police were not notified for almost nine hours after the shooting," the report states.
Benson is being held without bail at the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center. He was formally arraigned Thursday and ordered to return for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 30.
