ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — One week after gunfire injured one person outside Albany’s J. Lane Theater, an Albany pastor is returning to that same location for prayer.

The service comes after a shooting on Oct. 10 outside the theater during Albany State University’s homecoming weekend.

Alive City Church will hold a “save our city” community prayer and worship service” at noon Sunday, Oct. 18, at 313 Pine Ave., according to Pastor Antonio Screen’s Facebook post announcing the service.

Pastor Screen said the goal is to reach the younger generation and promote safety in the Albany community.

“We’re taking prayer to the place where the pain happened,” the post said. “Last weekend, gunfire shook our community. But this Sunday, we’re returning to that very place with a different sound… the sound of prayer, worship, hope, and healing.”

Pastor Screen is welcoming everyone to come out and support.

WALB also spoke to Je’Nita Lane, owner of the theater, who was there when the shots rang out. She said they had just started letting people in not too long before the incident.

“We only had about 60 people inside of the building at the time that this thing happened outside. We were working hard to get the people inside of the building,” Lane said.

She was at the front doorway assisting when the chaos unfolded.

“I heard something happening I didn’t know what it was. I turn around and try to get away, and I fell actually in the doorway. My shoe came off and I lost my phone. One of the promoters actually pulled me into the ticket booth,” Lane said.

According to Lane, there were 15 security guards present in addition to Albany Police Department, Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol. She also said this is the first incident she’s experienced in her four years of being at the theater.

“The initiators of that particular incident- those are the people to blame. Law enforcement did a great job. We had adequate security. We had 15 non law enforcement security guards for the event.”
