Description
WASHINGTON (TNND) — FBI agents who "simply followed orders" during the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol are not at risk of being fired, according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press.
The memo from acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove also accused acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll of "insubordination" for failing to comply with demands for information about the cases.
"Let me be clear: No FBI employee who simply followed orders and carried out their duties in an ethical manner with respect to January 6 investigations is at risk of termination or other penalties," part of the email read.
"The only individuals who should be concerned about the process initiated by my January 31, 2025 memo are those who acted with corrupt or partisan intent, who blatantly defied orders from Department leadership, or who exercised discretion in weaponizing the FBI," he added.
The update follows the FBI providing the Department of Justice with information about agents who worked on probes involving President Donald Trump.
Citing anonymous sources, CNN on Tuesday said the FBI shared the identity of at least 5,000 FBI employees who participated in investigations related to the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
FBI employees filed two lawsuits to try and halt the collection and potential dissemination of names of investigators.
Plaintiffs legitimately fear that the information being compiled will be accessed by persons who are not authorized to have access to it,” according to the 16-page lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
Trump's administration had been gearing up to fire several FBI agents who were engaged in the investigations.
Trump and his Republican allies have long accused the Biden administration Justice Department of being "weaponized" against conservatives.
On his first day in office, Trump granted sweeping clemency to more than 1,500 of the rioters who were charged for the attack on the Capitol.
