ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -While Thanksgiving is a day to express gratitude it’s also a day to help the less fortunate.
Members of the Saints of God House of Worship made the day special for those in need by serving Thanksgiving meals.
Volunteers spent hours preparing Thanksgiving classics for the community instead of spending the day with their families. It’s the church’s twentieth year hosting this dinner, and organizers sat they feel called to serve in this way.
“We are doing what the word of God tells us to do and it tells us to see about those that are in need”, says Betty Wright, a missionary with the church.
The church prepared classics like mac and cheese, black eye peas, and more. They made enough food to feed nearly 300 people.
“All the food that is prepared today comes through our church. All the members in our church we get together and we all cook. Everybody cooks different dishes”, says volunteer Frank Wright.
Volunteers serve the public before they eat their own Thanksgiving dinner. They say seeing people grateful for a warm meal makes the sacrifice worth it.
Volunteer, Torian Chester says, “People that normally wouldn’t have a good meal for Thanksgiving, to see them happy and they have plenty to eat and this really great food but that gives me joy to see them happy.”
Giving back for some has given Thanksgiving a new meaning.
“Just to see the gratitude being able to see that what we are doing in the community has an impact and that we can be a light in this world. “
Every person that has received a plate has been grateful, and some say that we should all be thankful and truly grateful for what we have.
