Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — The city of Albany has received more than $7.3 million in federal funding to improve safety at two intersections that have been the site of multiple serious and deadly crashes.

The city announced it has been awarded a total of $7,368,640 from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program.

The funding, now part of the Albany-Dougherty County community’s $9,210,800 Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, supports the construction of a roundabout at Raidum Spring Road and Joseph Holley Circle North, near Albany State University’s East Campus, along with shoulder upgrades and warning signs at Tarva Road and Eight Mile Road.

The city says that seven people died and there were 16 serious crashes at these intersections between 2019 and 2023. Officials cite failure to yield, disregard for traffic controls, and roadway departures as factors that contributed to the crashes.

By implementing these new safety improvements, the city hopes to reduce the number of serious crashes and increase overall safety in the Albany-Dougherty community.
