BERRIEN COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - A high school graduation celebration turned frightening Saturday night after gunfire erupted during a party in Berrien County, leaving a teenager injured and several vehicles damaged.

According to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 10:50 p.m. to a residence off Teeterville Highway in reference to a drive-by shooting that had just occurred.

Authorities say a 17-year-old boy was shot in the ankle. He was taken by personal vehicle to SGMC Health Berrien before later being transferred to Savannah for additional treatment. Officials say he has since been released.

Investigators also say at least four vehicles and a home were struck by bullets during the shooting, which they determined came from a passing vehicle.

Sheriff Ray Paulk called the incident a “reckless and cowardly act.”

“It is this kind of reckless and cowardly act that causes innocent people to be injured and killed,” Paulk said. “We are thankful that no one else was injured.”

The sheriff’s office says investigators are interviewing multiple witnesses and bystanders as they work to piece together exactly what happened.
