Description

CLIMAX TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWMT) — A tree fell on a vehicle in Michigan, killing three children, during a weekend storm that swept the region, authorities said Monday.

A 2-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy, and an 11-year-old girl died after a tree fell on their car on East S Avenue west of South 47th Street, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office (KCSO). All 3 were family members from Branch County, the youngest two siblings and the oldest their cousin.

Three others were also injured in the accident and taken to the hospital, one in critical condition, and the other two in stable condition, but their identities have not yet been released reported WWMT.

"The family could not have avoided this," Sheriff Richard Fuller told reporters, adding that the tree struck the passenger area where the children were sitting. "It was such a large tree that it came across two lanes of traffic and out the other side of the vehicle for about 12 more feet," the sheriff said.

The deaths are still being investigated, however, it appears weather is the main contributing factor to the accident, deputies said.

KCSO extended their "most sincere condolences to the family, loved ones, and friends of the victims in this tragic incident."

The area had been under a severe thunderstorm warning at the time.

Trees were downed and thousands were without power after severe storms pushed through West Michigan on Sunday. Monday morning, power was restored to thousands, according to Consumers Energy officials. As of Monday afternoon, nearly 300,000 power outages still were reported, according to poweroutage.us.

Meanwhile, more potentially dangerous weather is predicted across parts of the Southeast U.S.

Clusters of thunderstorms accompanied by strong to severe wind gusts and perhaps a few tornadoes could spread across much of the Southeast on Monday, the National Weather Service said.
