Description

LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) —Lee County officials are answering questions about when residents can expect refund checks.

According to Lee County Tax Commissioner Wendy David, the Lee County Board of Commissioners, Lee County Board of Education and Tax Commissioner’s Office have signed agreements establishing the process for distributing refunds to eligible taxpayers.

David said the final refund data has been reviewed and verified by both the county and school system and submitted to the county’s property tax software vendor for processing.

“We anticipate receiving finalized totals for each participating taxing authority within the next week.”

Once those totals are confirmed, the county and school board will provide their share of the refund funding to the Tax Commissioner’s Office, which will then issue refund checks.

David said the refund process will involve more than 20,000 checks and will take time as staff work to print and mail payments.

Officials said refund checks will be issued only to the property owner of record listed on the 2025 tax digest.

Assessment notices mailed

The Lee County Board of Tax Assessors approved the preliminary tax digest and authorized assessment notices to be mailed. The notices explain each property’s value and outline the appeal process.

Chairman Phillip Husain said that with corrective action taken on the overpayment issue, the board is now focused on this year’s digest and ensuring fair valuations across all property types.

“It’s kind of trying to be fair in a system that no one likes to talk about or get involved in. Who likes taxes? Myself, not included,” Husain said. “But it’s trying to make the whole system fair regardless of property type or value of the property.”

Officials said taxpayers should watch for updates from the tax commissioner’s office in the coming weeks as the refund process continues.
