Description

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and other officials held a press conference following the Ruidoso floods that killed three people.

The victims, who were swept downstream by the unprecedented floodwaters, include a man aged between 40 and 50, a 4-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy. Officials said they are not releasing their identities at the moment.

More rain and possible flooding are expected on Saturday, according to officials, and they are preparing for the possible events.

Officials said 200-400 homes were impacted, with the majority, they believe, being secondary homes. About 100-150 families were affected.

Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford said he spoke to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and that she said the national emergency disaster declaration will be signed soon by President Donald Trump.

Gov. Grisham added she was very sorry for the loss of life and said they are working with locals to help them rebuild.

“How sorry we are. The children and the adult man we lost in this community are unfathomable, unfair, and the worst of these kinds of disasters. My condolences on behalf of the whole state,” she said. “There are other losses as well. The number one job is to asses those losses, to get every business, big and small back on its feet."

Grisham said Noem will possibly visit the area, and it appears FEMA will give millions of dollars for recovery efforts upfront instead of reimbursing it. The federal government is expected to give about $15 million, according to Gov. Grisham.

“Working with Mayor Crawford and with your county and first responders, this team is a team I go to train other communities to respond to their disaster,” Grisham said. “While we're all grieving, we have to think about the next decade, not just this week or next weekend."

Local officials said in total, they have conducted 65 rescues in the past few days.

The floods were caused by 2-3 inches of rainfall on the South Fork burn scar.

Donations of cleaning goods and supplies can be dropped off at the Humane Society Resale shop located at 25962 US HWY 70, or monetary donations can be given at the Community Foundation of Lincoln County.
