Description
TIFT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Two people were hospitalized after a chase that started in Turner County ended in a three-vehicle crash in Tift County on Sunday, Nov. 16.
Georgia State Patrol (GSP) said the driver of a 2023 Dodge Challenger was fleeing from the Sycamore Police Department. The officer tried to stop the driver for speeding on I-75 South in Turner County, but lost sight of the Challenger just north of Tift County.
The officer passed along a BOLO for the Challenger as it continued south on the interstate.
GSP said a Tift County deputy spotted the Challenger near mile marker 63, where the vehicle exited the interstate. The deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver fled west on King Road toward Carpenter Road.
A GSP trooper was stopped at the intersection of King Road and Carpenter Road when he saw the Challenger pass him, run a red light, and turn south onto Carpenter Road.
The trooper activated his lights and siren and tried to catch up to the Challenger.
At around 8:29 a.m., the Challenger ran a red light at the intersection of Carpenter Road and GA-520. GSP said this led to the vehicle hitting a Ford F-350 pick up truck that was headed east on GA-520. The collision caused the cab to separate from the bed of the truck.
Parts of the truck hit two unoccupied vehicles in the Hog N Bones parking lot.
GSP said the Challenger came to rest on Carpenter Road, just south of the GA-520 intersection.
The trooper continued towards the Challenger and drove across an oil patch that caused the patrol vehicle to slide to a stop, hitting the right side of the Challenger with it’s front.
As a result, the driver of the Challenger sustained severe injuries and was taken to Tift Regional by an ambulance. The driver was then airlifted to a hospital in Navicent Health in Macon, according to GSP.
The driver of the F-350 was taken to a hospital by a private vehicle.
GSP said a small quantity of suspected marijuana was found in the Challenger, along with a firearm and a large quantity of cash.
The trooper was not injured, and the patrol vehicle only suffered minor damage.
