ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On Friday, Dougherty County school police announced that 12 students throughout the school system have been arrested for making several school threats.
The students are between the ages of 12 to 15. Dougherty County Schools police chief Troy Conley said four of those students are currently at the Regional Youth Detention Center (RYDC).
The students face felony counts of terroristic threats and acts with additional changes pending. Each student also faces additional disciplinary action through the school system, according to Dougherty County Schools Superintendent Kenneth Dyer.
Dougherty County School officials and police held a press conference to announce the arrests.(walb)Conly said the students are responsible for five gun violence-related threats. The threats started on Sept. 8 and continued as recently as Thursday night.
More arrests are expected as police are still investigating two other cases of school threats.
Dyer said it’s sad to see the impacts of these threats on the school system, especially at a sensitive time following the Apalachee High School Shooting.
“The threats are not jokes. They’re not funny and they’re intended to terrorize, to cause people to be afraid and disrupt our school community and we’re not going to stand for that,” he said.
