THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WALB) - Eight dogs that survived what some would call a horror story, are now ready to be adopted at the Thomasville Humane Society.

In January of this year, investigators with the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office and Thomasville Humane Society responded to an animal complaint in Brooks County. When they arrived on scene, the humane society said they found 11 fearful, starving dogs suffering from horrible conditions.

Chandler Giddes, Executive Director of the Thomasville Humane Society, said three dogs had to be euthanized to prevent any further trauma or stress. Giddes said the three dogs were not improving.

The remaining eight puppies are now healthy physically, emotionally and mentally. Making them ready for adoption.

“Several of them are very young puppies,” Giddes said. “While they were very fractious to begin with and very fearful, a few days of routine food, forced interactions, and some routine that this is a leash and it’s not going to hurt you, and I am a person and we’re good. With those kind of interactions the puppies made an immediate turnaround.”

According to a Brooks County incident report, the previous owner of the dogs, Richard McLeod, is facing aggravated cruelty to animals charges.

McLeod was arrested in January when deputies responded. He is now being held in the Brooks County Jail without bond.
