ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Law enforcement agencies across South Georgia, including the Albany Police Department, are mourning the loss of Hahira Police Officer Caleb Abney. The 25-year-old officer was killed early Thursday after being struck during a traffic stop on Interstate 75.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Abney was sitting in his marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated near mile marker 31 when a driver traveling nearly 100 miles per hour crashed into the rear of his patrol car. The impact pushed his vehicle into the car he had originally pulled over
Albany Police Chief Michael Persley offered his condolences and called on both law enforcement and the public to support Abney’s family.
“First, we want to start off by sending our heartfelt condolences to the family of Officer Caleb Abney with the Hahira Police Department,” Persley said. “So we’re asking that the members of the law enforcement community extend out to any kind of support that’s possible to support Caleb’s family and the department during this time. And also, we’re asking the community to wrap your arms around them during this difficult time.
Funeral services for Caleb Daniel Abney will be held Sunday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, according to Purvis Funeral Home.
