Description
DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) - As educators across Georgia work to close reading gaps, a former University of Georgia and NFL player is bringing his message about literacy directly to students in Coffee County.
Malcolm Mitchell, who played wide receiver at the University of Georgia before going on to play in the NFL, will host a Reading Rally at Coffee High School Tuesday morning. He will provide free copies of his books to elementary and high school students while speaking about the importance of reading.
The event is part of the “Reader 2 Leader” initiative, focused on encouraging students to build strong literacy skills early.
Educators say the message comes at a critical time.

Across Georgia and nationwide, reading proficiency has declined in recent years, particularly following the pandemic. Research shows students who are not reading proficiently by third grade are significantly more likely to struggle academically and face lower graduation rates.
School leaders say putting books directly in students’ hands is one step toward closing that gap.
Tuesday’s rally will feature a program inside the Coffee High School gymnasium, including a reading warm-up, live read-aloud, and a student question-and-answer session. Students will receive copies of Mitchell’s book at no cost.
Mitchell has publicly shared his own struggles with reading growing up and how improving his literacy changed the trajectory of his life, helping him succeed at UGA and eventually in the NFL.
Administrators hope his story resonates with students who may be facing similar challenges.
School officials say the goal is urgent and long-term: strengthen literacy today to impact graduation rates, career readiness, and the future of the community.
The rally begins at 8 a.m. at Coffee High School. A luncheon will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the CHS Media Center.
