Description
WORTH COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - The Worth County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is warning the public of a scammer posing as a deputy.
The sheriff’s office said a scammer is calling residents claiming to be a deputy with WCSO. The scammer claims to be “Deputy Davis” and is doing the following:
- Telling people over the phone that they missed a court date and now have a Failure to Appear warrant.
- Giving fake badge numbers and warrant numbers to sound official.
- Telling victims that they need to stay on the phone, go to an ATM, and withdraw money.
- Sending a QR code through text message.
- Telling people to go to a convenience store with a Bitcoin machine.
- Telling people to scan a QR code and put money into a Bitcoin machine. Then, after getting a receipt, go to the sheriff’s office to meet with the deputy.
WCSO says it will never call and tell people to pay money at a convenience store, through Bitcoin, or QR codes. The sheriff’s also will also never call to tell you that you have a warrant and must pay over the phone.
WCSO is asking people to talk with parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends to protect them from falling victim to this scam.
