CAIRO, Ga. (WCTV) - Your help is needed to honor fallen veterans this holiday season in Grady County.
Last year was the first time Grady County took part in this initiative. Ruby Moore, the coordinator for Grady County Wreaths Across America, said they were able to honor 80 veterans at four local cemeteries. This year, they’re adding the four city cemeteries in Cairo and are looking to honor 1,400 veterans.
“In the local cemeteries, you know a lot of, unfortunately, people in the family have passed, so nothing is getting put out there, so at least this is a way to honor them in a special time of year,” Moore said.
This year, they’re looking to provide wreaths for the following cemeteries: Cairo City Cemetery, Crestview Cemetery, Forest Lawn Cemetery, Greenwood Cemetery, Pine Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Gainey Cemetery, Rehberg/Baggett Cemetery and Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
“It won’t have the same impact as say, in a national cemetery, because all of those there are veterans. But to see, in a local cemetery, there’s a lot of veterans, and a lot of them we’re finding aren’t marked. It’s taken a lot of genealogical research to find these gentleman and women to put a list together,” Moore said.
The committee, made up of Moore and four others from the Cairo American Legion and VFW said right now, they need 192 more wreaths. Each one costs $17. To sponsor a wreath, click here. The deadline is December 1st.
Wreaths will be placed at the Greenwood and Crestview cemeteries, with a full ceremony, on December 13th at noon. If you’d like to add your cemetery to the list for next year, or volunteer with their committee, please contact, Grady County Wreaths Across America.
