SYLVESTER, Ga. (WALB) — A Worth County mother says her 12-year-old son with autism has repeatedly come home from school in soiled diapers, raising concerns about how his care needs are being handled while he is in the classroom.

Kendra Odom said her son requires diapering and is unable to independently communicate all of his needs.

Odom said the issue has persisted as school just started back up, leaving her questioning whether her son is receiving the care he needs while at school.

Upon learning of the parent’s concerns through your inquiry, appropriate district personnel contacted the parent and are addressing the matter directly with her.

I spoke directly with the parent today regarding her concerns. During that conversation, she stated that she had not previously discussed this specific complaint with the Superintendent, principal, or the student’s teacher. This is consistent with what those individuals reported to the district.

2. What specific steps is the district planning to take?

District and school personnel have reviewed the concerns with the parent. The appropriate team will meet this week to review the student’s toileting needs, current procedures, and documentation and to determine whether any adjustments are needed.

3. Is there an IEP or 504 plan in place for the student that addresses his care needs?

Because this question involves an individual student’s educational records and services, we cannot confirm or discuss whether the student has an IEP or Section 504 Plan.
