Description
LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - [UPDATE: May 7 at 4 p.m.] A neighbor on Shumard Court said they woke up around 6 a.m. to chaos on their street.
Hope Bradley said she was taking her children to the bus stop when she saw police surrounding the victim’s home. Officers reportedly told her family to stay inside.
“I was actually kind of scared a little bit, but protecting my family too, because that’s what we need to do,” Bradley said.
Bradley said her family saw Bryant, the suspect, many times before home invasion incident. She said deputies were previously looking for Bryant, regarding his prior warrants.
“I’ve let the deputy sheriffs know,” Bradley said. “And I’ve actually spoke with them, saying, ‘Hey, what do we need? You know, what’s going on’? Not to be the nosy neighbor. I’m not. I’m just looking out, making sure everybody stays safe.”
Bradley said she hopes the two children in the home are taken care of.
[UPDATE: May 7 at 11 a.m.] As of 11 a.m., authorities said a possible barricade incident involved a woman and two children.
According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office press release, deputies responded to a home in the 100 block of Shumard Court for a domestic violence call. Authorities said the victim reported waking up and finding Bryant inside her home.
Authorities said Bryant allegedly held the victim against her will and threatened to “end her life” her while armed with a firearm.
The victim’s two children were with her, but she escaped and called 911, officials said.
The sheriff’s office said its SWAT team responded and found the home’s doors locked. Deputies later confirmed Bryant fled between the victim’s escape and their arrival.
Bryant faces charges including first-degree home invasion, kidnapping and possession of a firearm, officials said. He has active arrest warrants in Lee and Dougherty County.
Bryant remained at large as of 11 a.m. and is considered armed and dangerous, authorities said.
[UPDATE: May 7 at 7:41 a.m.] As of 7:04 a.m., authorities confirm the scene from an earlier law enforcement response is now safe, and the area has been reopened to the public.
Law enforcement officials say a Black male identified as Charles Bryant is currently wanted on active warrants. Deputies say Bryant is now considered armed and dangerous and is believed to be on the run.

Deputy Burgess confirmed that Bryant remains at large and should not be approached under any circumstances. Authorities are urging the public to remain alert.
Officials are asking anyone who sees Bryant or has information on his whereabouts to call 911 immediately.
Additional details are expected to be released later in the day as the investigation continues.
[ORIGINAL ARTICLE: May 7 at 6:45 a.m.] Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies are currently responding to a possible barricaded subject at a home in the 100 block of Shumard Court, according to a public safety alert issued Thursday morning.
Authorities say the area is restricted to incoming traffic as deputies work to safely resolve the active situation. Residents living nearby are being urged to remain inside their homes until further notice.
The sheriff’s office also says school bus pickup routes in the area are being affected because of the ongoing incident. Parents are encouraged to transport their children to school themselves once the scene is cleared and it is safe to do so.
Law enforcement officials have not released additional details about the subject involved or what led to the response.
This remains a developing situation.
WALB crews are on scene and will provide live updates as more information becomes available.
