MILWAUKEE (TNND) — A Wisconsin county judge was arrested by the FBI Friday for allegedly helping a man avoid immigration enforcement, according to Director Kash Patel.
Patel made the announcement on X and later deleted the post that said his office believes Judge Hannah Dugan "intentionally misdirected federal agents away from the subject to be arrested in her courthouse."
Patel identified Eduardo Flores Ruiz as the subject that Dugan is accused of helping evade arrest.
"Thankfully, our agents chased down the perp on foot and he's been in custody since," Patel continued. "But the judge's obstruction created increased danger to the public."
Dugan's attorney, Craig Mastantuono, told The Associated Press that she appeared in federal court before being released from custody. Her next court appearance is set for May 15.
“Judge Dugan wholeheartedly regrets and protests her arrest. It was not made in the interest of public safety," Mastantuono said during the hearing.
Patel thanked the FBI Milwaukee division for its "excellent work."
The arrest comes after the Trump administration has vowed to crack down on local officials thwarting federal immigration efforts and denounced "sanctuary cities."
Court documents are not yet available, and the Justice Department did not immediately comment.
In 2016, Dugan was elected to the county court Branch 31, according to her judicial candidate biography. She also served in the court's probate and civil divisions.
