The Kremlin said the truce will start at midnight on May 8 and last through the end of May 10 and was based on "humanitarian considerations."
It marks the 80th anniversary of Victory Day and the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not yet responded.
Putin previously rejected a proposal from the United States for a 30-day ceasefire that Ukraine agreed to.
Last week, President Donald Trump urged Putin to stop the deadly attacks on Kyiv after the deadliest attack on Ukraine's capital since last July.
"I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Lets get the Peace Deal DONE!"
Trump and Zelenskyy met before Pope Francis' funeral Saturday for the first time since the disastrous Oval Office meeting in February.
The White House confirmed the two met early Saturday and had a "very productive discussion" with more details to follow, Communications Director Steven Cheung said.
Zelenskyy called it a "good meeting" on social media.
Just before the ceasefire announcement, Ukraine and Russia targeted each other with long-range strikes. The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces downed 119 Ukrainian drones overnight, most of them over Russia’s Bryansk border region. In Ukraine, air raid sirens rang out across the country Monday morning. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
