VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) - Valdosta could soon be home to the National High School Football Hall of Fame.

The South Georgia city is part of a six-city search that includes others in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas and Tennessee.

For the past three years, the Hall of Fame has held its induction ceremonies in Canton, Ohio, which is already home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

However, leaders are looking for a permanent home to build a 35,000-square-foot museum and host major events such as Hall of Fame weekend. The museum would feature memorabilia, interactive exhibits and tributes to those who have contributed to high school football history.

Valdosta was previously considered for this designation back in the 90s, but the project never moved forward.

If selected, leaders expect the project to draw around 250,000 people to Valdosta annually.

Len Krichko with the executive board of the National High School Football Hall of Fame said it will take a strong support system to move forward.

“Trying to evaluate what kind of support we’ll get from government and also corporate support, the general public, volunteers and economic development and so forth,” Krichko said.

The announcement comes as the region celebrates several major features, including Valdosta High being ranked #1 in the country with the most all-time wins.

The selection process for the Hall of Fame’s next home is expected to take about 60 days.
