WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Department of Defense stated earlier this month that it officially accepted a luxury jet from Qatar to use as Air Force One, but legal teams for the U.S. and Qatari governments are now saying the deal is not finalized, officials told The Washington Post.
According to the anonymous source, Qatar wants a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Doha to say the deal was initiated by the Trump administration and that Qatar is not responsible for any future transfers of the plane's ownership.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly acknowledged the luxury jet as a "gift" from Qatar after his recent trip to the Middle East.
Shortly after accepting the jet, Trump took to social media to defend the administration's decision.
"The Boeing 747 is being given to the United States Air Force/Department of Defense, NOT TO ME!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. "It is a gift from a Nation, Qatar, that we have successfully defended for many years. It will be used by our Government as a temporary Air Force One, until such time as our new Boeings, which are very late on delivery, arrive."
Trump said Qatar reached out and offered him the jet, but reports from CNN and the New York Times suggest the Trump administration first approached Qatar about purchasing the plane after the president became upset about the delay of two Boeing jets bought during his first term for $3.9 billion.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed on May 21 that the "secretary of defense has accepted a Boeing 747 from Qatar in accordance with all federal rules and regulations." However, officials told The Washington Post the last communication between legal teams was May 9.
When faced with bipartisan backlash about accepting the jet, Trump said, "Only a fool would not accept" the $400 million luxury Boeing jet.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, called it "an issue of outright bribery and a serious issue of national security."
Senator Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, said he wouldn't accept it.
"There’s a lot of things Qatar can do for us that would be a lot more helpful than a plane, so on the plane I’d say thanks, no thanks, we’re going to build our own planes in the United States of America, we build them pretty good."
The jet would require extensive modifications to meet the security and defense standards of Air Force One, potentially costing around $1 billion. Air Force One is outfitted with secure communications and defense systems, including weapons. It also would have to be able to withstand the potential impacts of a nuclear blast.
