CORDELE, Ga. — A suspect is in custody following a multi-county chase that began after a fatal shooting Saturday, June 27, in Cordele, according to investigators.

June 29 update:

The suspect, who has not been identified, ran from police and led law enforcement through several counties, including Coffee and Jeff Davis. Officers from multiple agencies were involved, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Crisp County Sheriff’s Office, Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Office, Hazlehurst Police Department, Coffee County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol.

According to Douglas Now, the Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement on its Facebook page Saturday night alerting citizens that units were between Hazlehurst and Snipesville investigating an incident that began in Crisp County.

Douglas Now reported that the chase ended when a Coffee County deputy performed a PIT maneuver on the suspect between Snipesville and Hazlehurst. The suspect was taken into custody following the maneuver.

Cordele Police said the shooting happened on the 1300 block of Drayton Road at 6:44 p.m. Saturday. Officers found two adult male victims and immediately began providing emergency first aid, but one of them died, according to the Cordele Police Department.

Crisp County Coroner Richard Wright identified the person killed as Correnthian Jeremiah Cooks, 20. Family members told WALB that Cooks had recently left the Navy and had been hired for a job at a Raising Cane’s in Albany that has not yet opened.

Family members identified the injured victim as Damien Johnson, 19. Johnson’s aunt said he remains hospitalized and that family members have not been allowed to see him. Officials said Johnson was transported to Madison Healthcare in Macon. Johnson is expecting a child in August.

Cordele Police said four people were detained in the case but have not confirmed any arrests.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case.
