SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Caroline Dias-Goncalves remains in the custody of the Aurora, Colorado, ICE facility despite what Colorado officials called "illegally accessed information."
Dias-Goncalves' mother confirmed her daughter was still at the detention facility as of Wednesday. She said they paid bail, but they don't know when she will be released.
On June 5, Dias-Goncalves was pulled over on I-70 outside of Loma, Colorado, on her way to visit her boyfriend.

In a traffic stop that lasted less than 20 minutes, Investigator Alexander Zwinck checked Dias-Goncalves' information.
The investigator let her go with a warning, but she didn't get far. Just moments later, Dias-Goncalves was detained by ICE and taken to the detention facility in Aurora.
According to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, the deputy was part of a Signal app chat created by Homeland Security to stop the flow of drugs on highways throughout western Colorado. The chat was mixed with local, state, and federal law enforcement.
ICE was in the chat, but the sheriff's office said they didn't know they were using it for immigration purposes.
The sheriff's office provided the following statement:
"Our Deputy was part of a communication group that included local, state, and federal law enforcement partners participating in a multi-agency drug interdiction effort focusing on the highways throughout Western Colorado. We were unaware that the communication group was used for anything other than drug interdiction efforts, including immigration. We have since removed all Mesa County Sheriff’s Office members from the communication group. Through our Administrative Investigation, we have learned that the federal representatives within the communication group began using the material collected for drug interdiction efforts to extrapolate immigration information for the purposes of ICE enforcement. This use of information is contradictory to Colorado law and was initially intended for the purpose of reducing illegal drug trafficking in Colorado. Unfortunately, it resulted in the later contact between ICE and Miss Dias Goncalves."
2News reached out to the Department of Homeland Security and asked why Dias-Goncalves was detained, what the grounds/protocol for detaining someone are, if Dias-Goncalves has been released, how long she was in the detention facility, and if it was a lawful use of the chat to find and detain Dias-Goncalves.
They sent 2News a statement that did not fully answer our questions, just minutes later:
“Caroline Dias-Goncalves, an illegal alien from Brazil, was arrested by ICE on June 5, 2025. Her visa expired over a decade ago. President Trump and Secretary Noem are committed to restoring integrity to the visa program and ensuring it is not abused to allow aliens a permanent one-way ticket to remain in the U.S. She will remain in ICE custody pending her immigration proceedings.
President Trump and Secretary Noem’s message to illegal aliens is clear: LEAVE NOW. Illegal aliens can take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $1,000 and a free flight to self-deport now. We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live the American dream. If not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return.”
2News reached out to them again later in the afternoon, asking about the exact whereabouts of Caroline Dias-Goncalves. We have not heard back.
