(TNND) — Ukraine managed to destroy the bridge connecting Russia and the occupied Crimean Peninsula with explosives planted underwater hours after a Russian attack targeted the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Tuesday, killing at least three people and injuring many others.
"The SBU conducted a new unique special operation and struck the Crimean Bridge for the third time — this time underwater!" Ukraine's security service wrote on Telegram.
SBU said it used 1,100 kilograms of explosives to "severely damage" the underwater pillars supporting the bridge.
“God loves the Trinity, and the SBU always sees things through to the end and never does the same thing twice. We previously struck the Crimean Bridge twice, in 2022 and 2023. So today we continued this tradition, this time underwater,” Vasyl Malyuk, the head of the SBU, said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the Tuesday assault from Russia, saying it underscored that Moscow has no intentions of halting the three-year war.
"It is obvious: without global pressure – without decisive actions from the United States, Europe, and everyone in the world who has the power – Putin will not agree even to a ceasefire," Zelenskyy wrote on X. "Not a single day goes by without Russia striking Ukrainian cities and villages. Every day, we lose our people to Russian terror. Every day, Russia gives new reasons for tougher sanctions and stronger support for our defense."
The attacks come one day after leaders made no progress during a second round of direct peace talks in Istanbul. Delegations ended up agreeing to swap 6,000 bodies of soldiers killed in action.
Over the weekend, a Ukrainian drone attack destroyed more than 40 warplanes at air bases deep inside Russia, and Russia fired the biggest number of drones — 472 — at Ukraine since its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The war has killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to the United Nations, as well as tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line where the war of attrition is grinding on despite U.S.-led efforts to broker a peace deal.
