(TNND) — President-elect Donald Trump reacted to the death of former President Jimmy Carter with words of gratitude and respect, despite their political differences.

“While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for,” Trump said Sunday on Truth Social. “He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect. He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed. He was also very consequential, far more than most Presidents, after he left the Oval Office. Warmest condolences from Melania and I to his wonderful family!”

In an earlier post, Trump said Carter’s presidency came at a pivotal time for the country and that “we all owe him a debt of gratitude.”

President Joe Biden called Carter, who died at 100, “an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian.”

“With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House. “He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe.”

Carter was elected in 1976 as the 39th president. After his single-term presidency, he went on to win a Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomacy work through The Carter Center.

Former President Barack Obama said in a social media post that Carter “taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service.”

Former President George W. Bush offered his “heartfelt condolences” in a statement released by his presidential center.

Former President Bill Clinton said in a statement that Carter “worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world.”
