Description

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE/Gray News) - At least 15 people are dead and more than 35 are injured after a pickup truck plowed through a crowd in New Orleans’ French Quarter early New Year’s Day.

The truck drove into a crowd around 3 a.m. Wednesday on Canal and Bourbon Streets. Authorities say Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, drove a truck through barricades intentionally at high speed into the crowd.

After crashing into heavy machinery, Jabbar got out of the vehicle and began shooting at responding police officers, injuring two. They are both listed in stable condition.

Jabbar, who authorities said was an Army veteran from Texas, was killed in the gunfire.

New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said Jabbar was “attempting to take out as many people in the path as possible.”

Authorities are also investigating possible improvised explosive devices at the scene, according to the FBI.

President Joe Biden delivered remarks on Wednesday night. He said Jabbar posted videos on social media before the attack that indicated he was inspired by ISIS and felt “a desire to kill.”

The truck used in the attack had a Texas license plate and was carrying an ISIS flag, according to the FBI. A handgun, an AR-style rifle and improvised explosive devices were found inside.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell called it a “terrorist attack.”

“We do know that the city of New Orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack,” she said.

Later Wednesday morning, the FBI announced that it was investigating it as an act of terrorism.

At a press conference, officials said they do not believe Jabbar acted alone and are asking the public to help track down any of his associates.

Investigators have reviewed video showing three men and a woman placing an improvised explosive device in connection with the attack, according to a Louisiana State Police bulletin obtained by The Associated Press.

The revelation could help explain why officials at the news conference said that they were aggressively hunting for additional suspects and did not believe Jabbar acted alone.

Kirkpatrick said the majority of the injured victims are locals in the area.

Biden says he is also in contact with Secretary of Homeland Security Ali Mayorkas and other top administration officials.

“The FBI is already on the ground supporting local law enforcement in the investigation and the President will continue to be briefed throughout the day,” the statement added.

The attack came toward the end of New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans and hours before the kickoff of the Sugar Bowl game between Notre Dame and the University of Georgia, with thousands expected to be in attendance.

In the aftermath of the attack, officials have postponed the Sugar Bowl game to Thursday.
