FORT HOOD, Texas (CNN) - President Donald Trump and his advisors are debating whether to call off plans to livestream the execution of the Fort Hood shooter, according to sources.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced plans to livestream the execution of Nidal Hassan last week.

Democrats and some Republicans raised objections about the idea.

Trump’s position

Sources say the president was not initially aware of Hegseth’s plan but firmly backs the idea of using a firing squad to kill Hassan.

Hassan was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding dozens of others at Fort Hood in 2009.

Law enforcement responded to the attack and shot Hassan in the back. He has been paralyzed from the waist down ever since.

Sources say Trump does not necessarily like the optics of livestreaming the execution of a man in a wheelchair.

Hassan is set to die on Dec. 3 at Fort Hood.
