WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday that he will give it two weeks to determine if Russian President Vladimir Putin is serious about peace talks with Ukraine.
When asked if he thinks Putin actually wants to end the war, Trump responded by saying, "I can't tell you that, but I'll let you know in about two weeks. Within two weeks. We're going to find out very soon. Uh, we're gonna find out whether or not he's tapping us along or not, and if he is, we'll respond a little bit differently."
He also voiced his disappointment with Putin and people being "killed in the middle of what you would call a negotiation."
Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Russia's escalating attacks on Ukraine and said Putin "has gone absolutely CRAZY," after he launched what's being described as the largest aerial attack of the Russia-Ukraine war.
"I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!" Trump wrote on Truth Social Sunday. "He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever."
On Tuesday, rhetoric between the White House and the Kremlin quickly escalated with a pair of social media posts suggesting the possibility of a major escalation between the global superpowers.
"What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realize is that if it weren’t for me, lots of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD. He’s playing with fire!" Trump said.
Just over two hours later, Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president who currently serves as the deputy chair of Russia's Security Council, posted on X, "Regarding Trump's words about Putin 'playing with fire' and 'really bad things' happening to Russia. I only know of one REALLY BAD thing — WWIII. I hope Trump understands this!"
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy chimed in on Monday, calling on the U.S. and Europe to increase sanctions on Russia.
"New and strong sanctions against Russia — from the United States, from Europe, and from all those around the world who seek peace — will serve as a guaranteed means of forcing Russia not only to cease fire, but also to show respect," Zelenskyy said in a video on X.
However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told senators the president believes that if the White House threatens sanctions, Russia will disengage from peace talks.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday that Putin and Trump agreed to a prisoner swap and reportedly called the American president "a man who wants results."
