WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump declined to comment on the letter he allegedly signed for disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein's 50th "birthday book" and called it a "dead issue" when questioned by NBC News.
"I don't comment on something that's a dead issue. I gave all comments to the staff. It's a dead issue," Trump said on a Tuesday morning phone call.
On Monday, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released an image of the letter allegedly drawn and signed by Trump.
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky. and House Oversight leadership subpoenaed the Epstein estate to receive the letter and other documents.
The so-called Epstein birthday letter caused a stir when The Wall Street Journal was the first to publish an article that said in 2003, Trump contributed to a lewd booklet given to Epstein as a gift, compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell.
The article discusses a book of birthday letters, including one with a naked woman outline and the signature, “Donald.” They say the letter ends with "Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret."
Trump denied he wrote the letter to the Journal.
This is not me. This is a fake thing. It's a fake Wall Street Journal Story," Trump said.
Trump responded by filing a libel lawsuit against the publishers of the Wall Street Journal and their reporters.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt doubled down on claims that Trump had no involvement, writing it's "very clear President Trump did not draw this picture, and he did not sign it."
"This is FAKE NEWS to perpetuate the Democrat Epstein Hoax!" Leavitt wrote on X.
Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking children, but died by suicide in his jail cell before he was tried in court.
