STATENVILLE, GA, Ga. (WALB) - Deputies with the Echols County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) made a significant arrest during a traffic stop at Dollar General in Statenville.

The stop occurred after deputies recognized a woman with an active warrant for Failure to Appear in Echols County Feb. 26.

According to ECSO, Megan Lofton, 41, of Fargo, was taken into custody without incident. Deputies found about $68 in stolen merchandise on her person.

During a vehicle search, they also recovered a controlled substance, later determined to be possessed with intent to distribute.

Additional stolen items from Walmart, totaling nearly $950, were also recovered. Lofton admitted to shoplifting from both stores.

She has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute (Felony)
  • Shoplifting (Misdemeanor)
  • Failure to Maintain Lane (Misdemeanor)
  • Suspended Registration (Misdemeanor)
  • Suspended License (Misdemeanor)

Lofton also faces felony shoplifting charges in Valdosta.

“The Echols County Sheriff’s Office will continue proactive enforcement efforts to protect our community and local businesses. Criminal activity — whether theft or drug distribution — will not be tolerated in Echols County."
