THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WALB) - Addam Barnes maintains a 3.5 GPA at Thomasville High School while competing in football, basketball, and track. He also works part-time at Jimmy John’s.
“It’s a lot. It’s a lot to balance out. When you really want it, it manages to work out,” Barnes said. “I’m graduating, gotta make money. In order to graduate you gotta get the grades, have some fun playing sports and try to make something of my future.”
Mother’s influence drives student-athlete
Barnes said his motivation comes from his family, particularly his mother, who works full-time in IT as a single parent.
“She works hard and it motivates me to work hard to see my mom do positive things,” he said.
Barnes works at Jimmy John’s to help support his family.
“She’s a good mom like, I wouldn’t ask for anybody else. She’s really nice, always there for me, always tries her hardest. You know, I just, want to do the best I can for her,” Barnes said.
Unwavering support from the stands
Barnes’ mother attends his games regardless of distance. When the basketball team made the Sweet 16 and traveled to Blue Ridge, she made the trip.
“No matter how far the trip was, she was always going to find a way to make it. When she couldn’t make the games, she would download NFHS and watch the game on there. I think that right there, just shows how much she cares,” he said.
Setting example for younger siblings
With younger siblings watching, Barnes said he tries to lead by example.
“All I can say is; make sure they are confident in themselves. Anything they want to do in life; they need to always stay focused and stay confident... then they can do anything they want,” he said.
Barnes will graduate on April 22. He plans to attend college in the fall and will likely remain in-state. His track season continues with the GHSA State Championships beginning May 12. The Bulldogs are chasing back-to-back titles.
