THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) - The city of Thomasville held two community events on Wednesday to support its new multimodal transportation plan that would expand travel options and increase safety.
City of Thomasville planner Kenny Thompson said they want to address issues before something goes wrong.
“We also want to make sure that we are just looking at our community in a way that you want Thomasville to continue to be connected, we want it to be a place where people have options where they have the ability to move around, get to work, get to school,” Thompson said.
According to the city website, the plan looks to expand sidewalks, bicycle routes, driving and personal transportation vehicle networks throughout the city.
“Physical recommendations, whether it is modifying the street, whether it’s adding sidewalks, kind of what are those key things that we can do to the infrastructure to make it safer for people walking or biking or getting around,” the city planner said.

The city also identified areas of high risk for accidents and injuries to pedestrians and bikers to prioritize for improvements. They pointed toward West Jackson Street, Smith Avenue and East Pinetree Boulevard.
“Identifying areas of transportation stress of areas that are maybe more dangerous or difficult that have had accidents but also looking at some of the potential routes from the areas of where people would want to get around in town,” Thompson said.
The city’s website said the plan is funded through a 2023 U.S. Department of Transportation RAISE grant worth $175,000.
Toole Design senior transportation planner, Byron Rushing said that the upgrades will be aimed at bridging gaps and improving accessibility for drivers, bikers and especially pedestrians.
“Are they away from fast moving cars? Are they in the shade? Do they have a convenient path through their neighborhood, safe routes to school?” he said.
Rushing stated that they are looking at data to make changes to high-risk areas.
Leaders will meet Thursday to draft up recommendations and a community recap at 5 p.m. at Hubs and Hops.
Per the city’s website, the plan also includes creating policies that support safer road design and address how transportation risks and accessibility affect different communities in Thomasville.
