ODDLY ENOUGH.. ACCORDING TO HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS... SOME BELIEVE THE CURRENT TOWN NAME IS A MISREADING FOR WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN *STATESVILLE*... WHICH DID APPEAR ON SOME MAPS.

OTHERS BELIEVE IT WAS NAMED AFTER A LOCAL FARMER AND STORE OWNER... JAMES W. STATEN.
